What 2.1 changes

Google describes 2.1 as an update to Nano Banana 2 with better visual quality, prompt adherence, typography and character consistency across turns of a conversational edit. It adds video and PDF input, search grounding with Google Web and Image Search, adjustable thinking levels, and fewer tiling artifacts in very wide or tall formats such as 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1.

The model card also lists known limits: small text can still render poorly, character consistency between input and output images is not always kept, and spatial placement is sometimes confused.

Reported, but not what Google's pages say

Some coverage says 2.1 costs half as much as Nano Banana 2 at every resolution, and that Nano Banana 2 shuts down on October 29, 2026. Google's pricing table puts 2.1 at about half the price at 1K and 2K but about three quarters at 4K, and its deprecations page listed no shutdown date for gemini-3.1-flash-image on 2026-10-08.
